The Knights-Errant: Malcador’s Grey Chosen and the Silent War

8 September 2026 · 5 minute read

In ghost-grey plate and shimmering false cloaks, they answered to no primarch and no Legion — only to a single old man upon Terra, and to the war he waged in shadow.

They wore no Legion colours. Where once a warrior’s armour proclaimed his gene-sire and his oaths, these figures went about in ghost-grey battleplate, cloaked in shimmering robes that made giants glassy and half-seen, like shapes glimpsed through a rain-slick window. The archives call them the Knights-Errant, though the name was half a jest at first — a title flung at a lone warrior who walked onto a burning battlefield courting death like some ancient knight-errant. He was amused to accept it. In the Silent War, a man who has renounced his rank and his Legion must find new names for himself.

This is the tale of the Sigillite’s chosen: how Malcador the Sigillite, First Lord of Terra, gathered a secret host while Horus burned the galaxy, and of the legacy those grey figures seeded into the long night that followed.

The Sigillite’s Foresight

While Horus Lupercal’s rebellion raged from world to world, Malcador was already looking past the fires to whatever Imperium might survive them. The sagas hold him to be a psyker of immense reach and unfathomable age — First Lord of Terra, founder of the Administratum, and Grand Master of Assassins besides. Such a man does not fight only the battle before him. He plays the long game, and the long game required instruments unbound by the ordinary chains of command.

The Legiones Astartes fought, in the old fashion, in an unbroken chain from primarch to sergeant. Malcador’s chosen would fight entirely apart from any such structure — the tacticae-savants of later ages file them among the ‘irregular’, the ‘non-doctrinal’, the simply ‘orphaned’ forces of that war. They answered to the Sigillite alone.

The First of the Grey

The archives name Nathaniel Garro, once Battle-Captain of the Death Guard, as the first of the Knights-Errant. When he fled the massacre at Isstvan aboard the frigate Eisenstein, bearing warning of the treason to Terra, Malcador called him to audience and gave him a new purpose. He was to serve the Emperor in a different way — as forerunner of an order that, in the Sigillite’s own words, would answer a new need: ‘the Imperium requires men and women of inquisitive nature, hunters who might seek the witch, the traitor, the mutant, the xenos.’

Garro surrendered his former rank. When a fellow survivor of the Seventh Company, Gallor, later remembered the captain’s old tone of defiance, Garro could only smile that those days were another life to them both. That was the price of the grey: everything a warrior had been, laid down.

The Recruiting Missions

Malcador tasked Garro with gathering others by name, and the missions were perilous. The chronicles record that he was sent to Calth in the very midst of the Word Bearers’ surprise assault to recruit Tylos Rubio of the Ultramarines. It was Rubio, suspicious of a lone warrior walking a warzone, who first spoke the name ‘knight-errant’ — and Rubio who, to save his comrades, unleashed the psyker powers forbidden by the Edict of Nikaea, and was censured for it. Such men, it seems, Malcador wanted.

Other missions carried Garro into the Sol system to sift loyalist from traitor among refugee ships, where he found the World Eater Macer Varren. The Visions of Heresy archives name Iacton Qruze of the Luna Wolves among the earliest gathered, and the wider sagas count Garviel Loken — the fallen son of the Luna Wolves, believed lost on Isstvan — among those the Sigillite reclaimed for the grey. No record survives of how many were called; for every name remembered, the archives whisper, countless more were lost by chance or by the hazards of galactic war.

Marked by the Sigil

Their plate was inscribed with Malcador’s own sigil, and their oaths were sworn to him and to no other. The sagas note a telling pattern: a high proportion of those recruited had been Librarians in their parent Legions, or at the least carried a propensity for latent psychic talent. In an age when the Emperor had forbidden the Librarius, Malcador quietly gathered the witch-blooded to his banner — a choice whose full purpose would not be revealed for millennia.

They were equipped for shadow work as much as war. The archives describe the Falsehood, a rare and fragile technology sewn into a robe that could shroud even an armoured giant from a passing eye. Garro, it is said, did not approve of such subterfuge. He wore it regardless. The Silent War was fought with deception as often as with bolter and blade.

The Silent War

These were, in the reckoning of the archivists, the pinnacle of the Chosen of Malcador — a secret army dispatched to the far reaches of the Imperium to prosecute the Sigillite’s Silent War against the traitors. It was a war fought without regular contact, with coordination decreasing and resources dwindling by the day. Key materials went missing or were reallocated; misunderstandings compounded until Imperial servants presumed enemy subterfuge behind every failure. In such murk the grey warriors moved, officially reckoned part of the Imperial Household, answerable to almost no one who knew their true purpose.

The Turning Page

The Buried Dagger chronicles preserve a moment near the end, when Malcador gathered his Knights-Errant and spoke plainly. ‘This has been a long time coming,’ he told them, ‘but as true as that is, it has come too quickly.’ Horus, his turncoat allies and the Ruinous Powers he had bargained with would soon be upon Sol; the page would turn to the siege of Terra. Some of the assembled had been recalled mid-mission, some had bided their time in waiting. None spoke, but the same question passed between them in exchanged glances: why are we here? The Sigillite showed a cold smile. He had a purpose in mind for every one of them.

The Legacy They Seeded

Malcador himself would not outlast the war by much — the archives record his end upon the Golden Throne, disintegrating in the Emperor’s stead. Yet what he seeded in grey armour outlived him by ten thousand years. The wider sagas hold that from the Knights-Errant, and above all from Malcador’s gathering of the psychically gifted, came the Grey Knights — the secret Chapter raised to stand against daemonkind — and that the hunter’s remit he first described seeded also the Holy Inquisition. Whether the old man foresaw every branch of that legacy, no record can say for certain. But the pattern is his: instruments loyal to no Legion, bound by oath alone, fighting the wars the Imperium dares not name. In the grim darkness, they endure still.

Questions from the Archive

Who were the Knights-Errant in Warhammer 40k?

They were a small, secret host of Space Marines gathered by Malcador the Sigillite during the Horus Heresy. Operating outside the normal chains of Legion command and officially reckoned part of the Imperial Household, they wore ghost-grey armour marked with Malcador's sigil and swore their oaths to the Sigillite alone, prosecuting his 'Silent War' against the traitors.

Was Garviel Loken a Knight-Errant?

The wider sagas count Garviel Loken — the son of the Luna Wolves believed lost during the Isstvan massacres — among those Malcador reclaimed for the grey. The first and best-recorded of the Knights-Errant, however, is Nathaniel Garro, former Battle-Captain of the Death Guard, whom Malcador tasked with recruiting many of the others.

Did the Knights-Errant become the Grey Knights?

The archives whisper that they did. Malcador deliberately gathered warriors with latent psychic talent — many former Librarians — and from this legacy the secret Grey Knights Chapter is said to descend, along with the roots of the Holy Inquisition. The novels record his gathering and purpose directly; the fullest chain of that legacy is drawn from later lore, so it is best treated as the sagas tell it rather than as cold certainty.
