People mistake stillness for simplicity. Rogal Dorn was never simple. He was finished — the way a fortress is finished.
The Ice-Caste of Inwit
He was raised on Inwit, a world of ice and darkness, by the ice-caste and by his adoptive grandfather — the old sire of the ice-hive clan, who taught the boy strategy, and the harder lesson of knowing when not to attack. Dorn slept beneath the old man’s fur-edged robe and knew full well no blood joined them. It did not matter. By the time the Imperium found him, the grandfather was forty winters dead, and Dorn ruled the whole Inwit Cluster at the head of the House of Dorn. His people called him emperor — until a thousand warships filled the sky.
One Ship Against Thousands
And here is the measure of the man: he did not wait to be summoned. Dorn came out to meet the Emperor aboard his own vessel, the Phalanx — a star-fortress the size of a small moon, one ship advancing calmly on an armada. His father was deeply impressed. The seventh son found took command of the Seventh Legion, the Imperial Fists, and the Crusade gained its master of stone and void. His rivalry with Perturabo — sibling, bitter, productive — was encouraged by the Emperor himself, two architects grinding each other sharp.
They would one day name him Praetorian of Terra, and give him the worst honour in the galaxy: the walls everything depended on.
