Corvus Corax: Primarch of the Raven Guard

Some sons were found on thrones, and one was found in a prison. It made him the only brother who began his reign by setting people free.

The Prison Moon

He woke beneath a glacier on Lycaeus, the prison moon of a forge world, with a cracked and broken machine beside him — his own incubator, though he wondered at it for lonely years. The prisoners raised him. He repaid them with the only gift that mattered: he taught them how to be free, and led the uprising that broke their chains, guard-tower by guard-tower, while the great planet they served filled half the sky.

‘I Thought You Would Be Taller’

When the Emperor came to the moon the freed slaves had renamed Deliverance, Corax recognised him — as if from an old dream. His first recorded words to the Master of Mankind: I thought you would be taller. They talked a full day, of the Crusade and of what Corax was; and in that conversation the son asked the question whose answer I am forbidden to write. Seventeen? he said. I remember that I was number nineteen. And his father’s face grew bleak, and he answered only: the other two — that is a conversation for another day. The day never came, child. It never comes.

The Nineteenth Legion

His Raven Guard fought as he had learned to fight on Lycaeus: from shadow, by surprise, with lightning claws and patience, black-clad and pale as their father — liberators by instinct in a Crusade that did not always want worlds liberated, merely compliant.

He gave his name to no city and his face to no coin. The ravens remember him anyway.
